What My Friends Like: Movie Review for The Purge

One of my lovliest friends and favorite people on the planet, Tony, has a great blog where he reviews movies. What I love about his page is that he doesn't just review the new and trendy, but goes back to the dvd shelf collecting dust and shines new light on films you may have skipped over. Not to mention his obsession for Sanda Bullock has inspired his rating system of "Would Sandra Watch This?" You can check out his blog Reely Critical here. And his review for the Purge below.

The Purge

07/16/2014

Starring: Ethan Hawke, Lena Headley, Max Burkholder Directed by: James DeMonaco

Can you imagine a world that is nearly perfect in terms of society? Unemployment rates of 1%, violence at a minimum. That's just what happens here - in the "new" America, because for 12 hours, one night a year - all crime is legal. This gives people the opportunity needed to release their inner demons so that they can function normally otherwise. When James's son takes pity on a stranger who is stranded outside during lock-down by letting him inside their home, all hell breaks loose for the Sandin family. They quickly realize the man they've let inside is a target, and that those after him will stop at nothing until they are able to kill him. When emergency services is not an option - it's every man for himself.

I thought it had a smart concept. It faces the curiosity of "what if". What if we didn't have an organized government, or we weren't able to dial 9-1-1? What would we do then? So while it may be only 12 hours a year, that's all it takes (less even) for the people to start causing mayhem. I wouldn't say this movie scared me, but if you put yourself in their shoes, maybe it could be. It makes you wonder too about your class in society. Would you be as protected as others? Would you make it through the night? Would you partake in the purge? I liked this movie because it makes you ask questions and makes you think about what exactly would YOU do in this given situation. So for a horror movie, I say job well done.

"Would Sandra Watch This?" YES
